According to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Turkey or China could also mediate between Ukraine and Russia if the United States really withdraws from the negotiations, the Kyiv Independent reports.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski says Turkey or China could be suitable mediators if the United States withdrew from talks. Following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Warsaw, Sikorski said he hoped the United States would be successful in its mediation efforts.
“But if this path turns out to be unsuccessful, there are other candidates,” Sikorski added. “There is Turkey, which maintains channels of communication. And then, above all, there is the People’s Republic of China, which, more than anyone else, has the means to make (Russian President Vladimir) Putin come to the negotiating table and soften his demands,” the Polish foreign minister has said, according to European Pravda.
Just a week ago, U.S. President Trump insisted he believed Russian President Putin wants peace, despite also saying Putin may be “tapping him along a bit.” Trump also admitted his displeasure at Putin shooting missiles into Ukraine.
Yesterday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that the U.S. was prepared to “walk away” from the negotiating table if it did not see Russia making progress in talks aimed at ending the war.
Turkey enjoys diplomatic and economic relations with both Russia and Ukraine and is a strategic player in the Black Sea region. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been vocal in wanting to help push diplomatic efforts to bring a ceasefire and ultimate end to the war. As to China, it has made no secret of being a close ally of Russia, despite also vying for the role of mediator.
Back in April, after two Chinese citizens were captured by Ukrainian forces, Zelensky claimed many more were on the ground.
China has consistently denied sending weapons or combat troops to Russia’s aid. Beijing is nevertheless seen as Moscow’s strategic partner, despite it communicating intentions to play the role of a neutral mediator.
At the time, Zelensky wrote: “Russia’s involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything but end the war.”
In terms of any chance the U.S. will walk away from negotiations, Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that this would happen if they felt the Russians were not engaging in talks in good faith. During that same interview, Vance also noted that Russia, as expected, had asked for “too much” and, in answer to whether or not the U.S. would ramp up military aid, he replied, “We do not want Ukraine to collapse,” adding that the U.S. wants it “to remain a sovereign country.”
On Truth Social, Trump posted, “As president, I will stay committed to securing peace between Russia and Ukraine, together with the Europeans, and a lasting peace it will be!”
