During the TVP presidential debate last night, the last one before Poles vote on May 18, candidates got testy on the topic of migration.
In the first round, there was a heated exchange of views between the two favorites, reports Do Rzeczy, when Karol Nawrocki, an unaffiliated candidate supported by right-wing Law & Justice (PiS), asked the liberal PM Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO), Rafał Trzaskowski, about the tenement house at Marszałkowska 66 in Warsaw.
In the second round, Nawrocki brought up the topic of immigration. He quoted Trzaskowski from 2015, speaking about submitting a pilot proposal to Brussels to accept 2,000 “refugees” to Poland.
“So we can see that you supported migration, created pilot projects, has that changed today? Nawrocki asked.
Trzaskowsk, the current mayor of Warsaw, replied: “You were the ones who prepared the centers for immigrants during your rule and you know that very well, while in 2015 I fought to secure the borders. We fought to solve the problems of migrants in third countries and I won a provision that clearly states that we will not accept any migrants if we help Ukraine and that is exactly what happened.”
Trzaskowski claimed that thanks to these provisions Poland did its job – it helped Ukraine and “no migration pact will come into force.” He added that PiS did not succeed in securing the border, then asking the PiS candidate, “Why did you vote against the act on tightening our visa policy?”
“So you didn’t create a pilot program for 2,000 refugees from Syria?” Nawrocki shot back.
“Answer my question, please,” the KO candidate interjected.
“You answer mine,” replied Nawrocki.
“There’s a word, perseveration. You can’t say anything without returning to PiS and saying: you, you,” said Nawrocki.
“Well, I’m talking to you. You’re from PiS, so I’m talking to you,” replied Trzaskowski.
Nawrocki finished by claiming that Trzaskowski “will flood Poland with illegal migrants.”
Poles will be replacing current PiS president, Andrzej Duda, who beat Rafał Trzaskowski in the second round of elections back in 2020. Trzaskowski is currently leading in the polls, but will need more than 50 percent of the first-round vote to avoid a second-round runoff.
