Ukraine joining the EU would affect Hungary for 100 years, says Hungarian MP

Máté Kocsis, the Fidesz faction leader in Hungary’s National Assembly, says Ukraine being a member of the European Union would seal the fate of Hungarians for 100 to 150 years. He also says Brussels is urging Ukraine’s accession to the EU without examining the consequences.

The MP told the press that, unlike other countries, the Hungarian government is asking people about the accession of a country at war in the form of a mail-in vote sent to all Hungarians, reports Magyar Nemzet

“A government or a local government can be elected every four or five years, but a decision about Ukrainian accession can only be made once in a lifetime, in our lifetime,” Kocsis pointed out, adding that, this is a decision that will determine the fate of Hungarians for 100 to 150 years.

An accelerated Ukrainian accession, he said, will bring “political, financial, public security, economic and social problems.” This is why Hungarians must express their opinion on the matter via the mail-in vote, as this will be properly represented by Prime Minister Orbán at the EU level during negotiations.

Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, persists with the argument that Ukraine should be admitted as a member of the European Union as soon as possible, despite Brussels also pushing hard for more war, highlighted Máté Kocsis.

Kocsis noted that Ukraine’s accelerated membership is not fair to those states that have already fulfilled the conditions for accession and that Hungary would practically lose its EU cohesion funds by admitting the country. The costs to rebuild Ukraine range all the way from hundreds of billions of euros to up 1 trillion euros. The MP additionally pointed to numerous security and public safety concerns that would also arise due to the activities of the Ukrainian mafia.

Saying that the current leadership in Ukraine is illegitimate, he also questioned with whom negotiations would take place.

“The minimum condition for starting accession negotiations would be the holding of a democratic election in Ukraine, which, however, requires peace first, so the EU leadership should primarily work on creating conditions for peace,” Kocsis stressed.

Another clear issue for Fidesz is the threat Ukraine membership would pose for “the European community of Patriots,” as Ukraine could potentially send some 70 to 80 representatives to Brussels, all of whom, Kocsis assumes, would be loyal to the Brussels liberal elite.

“This will be an irreversible decision,” he said, urging all Hungarians to send in their vote and make a responsible decision on the issue.
