Cop caught on tape saying he wants to shoot nationalists celebrating Australia Day

A South Australia Police officer has been caught on tape saying he wants to shoot and bash a group of nationalist activists who were celebrating Australia Day in Adelaide.

The recording was played at the end of a new documentary produced by White Australia about a march by the organisation’s activist branch the National Socialist Network (NSN) through the city on January 26 that was targeted by police, resulting in 16 arrests including of leader Thomas Sewell.

After Mr Sewell was taken into custody while making a speech at the National War Memorial, a microphone he was wearing picked up two officers talking about committing acts of violence against the nationalist group, who were waving Australian flags and singing Waltzing Matilda.

In the recording one officer appears to check whether his colleague’s bodycam was operating by asking “are you rolling?” and replies “okay good” after the second officer says “no”.

“I’m happy to shoot them,” the first cop then says.

“Happy to?” the second asks.

“I’m happy to shoot them,” the first officer repeats as voices can be heard singing Waltzing Matilda in the background.

“I wanna hammer these cunts. These guys… just need to be shot.”

The police officers are not identified in the 25-minute film, which is titled Summer Nationals 2025 and follows White Australia’s annual national meet-up, which was held in Adelaide this year.

The documentary was released on Thursday night and includes footage from the three-day event, beginning with a 10km run and a mixed martial arts tournament, followed by the Australia Day march, and ending with speeches held the next day and a compilation of corporate media coverage.

“For too long, the media has pushed biased, one-sided coverage of our movement,” the group said.

“This documentary provides an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at our organisation as we host our Summer Nationals event over the Australia Day weekend – an event which sparked nationwide headlines and led to the unjust arrest of 16 members.”

Mr Sewell is due to face court again later this month along with prominent National Socialist Network (NSN) activist Joel Davis, who was arrested while waiting for the other 16 outside court three days later and charged with “display Nazi symbol” for his NSN patch and a belt with an eagle on it.

Some of these arrested on Australia Day have had charges of “fail to cease loiter” and “possess article of disguise” dropped, while others are still before the courts, including Western Australian man Stephen Wells, who has been in jail ever since after refusing to agree to bail conditions that violate his political rights.

Mr Wells, 56, who spent weeks in solitary confinement after his arrest, is due to face court again on May 22, and was recently moved from Adelaide Remand Centre to the maximum security Yatala Labour Prison.

Mr Sewell is also fighting several court cases in Victoria after being charged over a series of political demonstrations and with “intimidating a police officer” for alleged online comments.
