A victory for Karol Nawrocki, the conservative Law and Justice (PIS) presidential candidate, would be a huge problem for the European Union and Germany. Nawrocki is expected to block the EU migration pact, the Green Deal and the Mercosur free trade agreement, believes MP Zbigniew Ziobro, the former Polish minister of justice.
The Civic Coalition (KO) candidate Rafał Trzaskowski and the PiS candidate Karol Nawrocki advanced to the second round of the presidential elections, which will be held on June 1, and the race is expected to be extremely tight.
In the first round, held last Sunday, Trzaskowski won 31.36 percent of the votes (6,147,797), while Nawrocki won 29.54 percent (5,790,804). According to the National Electoral Commission data, 356,993 more people voted for Trzaskowski than for Nawrocki.
However, some election experts are now predicting a slim victory for Nawrocki in the second round, in large part due to voters from the right-wing Confederation switching their vote to Nawrocki, along with voters who previously chose smaller right-wing candidates.
Polling is also showing Nawrocki eking out a victory in the second round.
Ziobro predicts problems for the EU and Germany
Former Minister of Justice and PiS MP Zbigniew Ziobro wrote on social media that if Nawrocki wins and becomes president, he will block solutions that are unfavorable for Poland and are being pushed through by the European Commission.
“The Migration Pact, the Green Deal, the Mercosur agreement – Donald Tusk agreed to all of this. In Brussels they know that even against Polish interests, Tusk and Trzaskowski will implement it,” Ziobro said on the X portal.
“A victory for Nawrocki would be a huge problem for the Germans because he will block it. That is why EU commissioners will do everything to ensure that their candidate wins,” added the former head of the Ministry of Justice.
Von der Leyen backs Tusk, says everything will change after Polish elections
Ziobro’s post is a reference to a report by French newspaper Le Monde describing how the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, supports Prime Minister Donald Tusk ahead of the presidential elections in Poland.
According to Le Monde, the head of the European Commission is avoiding controversial topics so as not to harm the KO candidate. As the French daily writes, there is an informal agreement between von der Leyen and Tusk, under which the EU commission president supports the government in Poland by turning a blind eye to the prime minister’s statements or even postponing the publication dates of reports that are offensive to Poland, including the one regarding the CO2 emission reduction target.
“Tusk is now allowed to make statements that would not be accepted from other leaders,” the newspaper notes, pointing out that this concerns issues such as the migration pact, the Green Deal or the Mercosur agreement, which hits the interests of Polish farmers.
This may tie into some of Tusk’s critical comments on immigration, including his claims that Poland will not have to accept migrants under the EU Migrant Pact, a claim that has been clearly refuted by experts. Notably, the EU itself, including von der Leyen, has not commented on Tusk’s claims about the EU Migration Pact so as not to harm his chances in securing the presidency for the left. All of these comments have been building up to this presidential election. Once the liberals win, Tusk will have broad power to implement the EU’s agenda, and in turn, can comfortably take a pro-migration course without the threat of vetoes from a conservative president.
