One of the biggest risks of Ukraine’s EU accession and pro-Ukrainian policy in Brussels is that the utility bill reduction, which the government wants to protect, would be abolished in Hungary, said Tamás Menczer, the communications director of Fidesz-KDNP, on Kossuth Radio’s Sunday program.
During the interview, as cited by Hirado, Menczer stressed that Brussels wants to help Ukraine by cutting off Europe from Russian raw materials, natural gas and oil. But if this happens, he said Hungary will have to abolish its cap utility bills, resulting in people’s electricity bills doubling and gas bills quadrupling.
To avoid this, he urged all Hungarians to take part in the Voks 2025, a survey sent out for people to express their opinion on allowing Ukraine into the EU.
According to Menczer, it is in both Europe’s and Hungary’s interest that the country be allowed to buy natural gas and oil from as many places and routes as possible for the sake of energy security and cheap prices.
“Our interest is therefore not to exclude Russian raw materials from the European energy supply, but to import and channel them, but now Brussels, led by Manfred Weber and Ursula von der Leyen, is acting in the opposite direction,” he said.
Menczer called it absurd that instead of acting in the interests of the members already in the “club,” Brussels is representing a country that is not part of the community. He further called on current leaders to resign given their poor decisions on the war in Ukraine, sanctions, and the €150 billion given to the war-torn country.
The Fidesz-KDNP communications director indicated that the war has so far cost every Hungarian family – according to conservative estimates – HUF 2.5 million (€6,100), and the continuation of the war, together with Ukraine’s accession to the EU, would cost every Hungarian family millions more.
“That is why we say that we should say no to Ukraine’s EU membership, and Voks 2025 now gives us the opportunity to do so,” he added.
Touching upon the topic of ballots not being received by all voters, the Fidesz rep said the government is seeking to remedy the situation soon. He also commented on Ukrainian spies in Hungary, saying that their goal is to get Hungarians to support Ukraine’s EU membership.
“The collusion between the Ukrainian intelligence service and the Tisza Party is clear,” he told the program host. He also claimed that opposition leader Péter Magyar is working directly with Kyiv, “thereby threatening all of Hungary and directly threatening Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.” Magyar has stated that his visit to Kyiv, during which he, and others, were photographed with one of the suspected spies, was to bring humanitarian aid to a children’s hospital.
