Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott on Reparations: African Americans ‘Are Owed a Lot’

Days after Maryland Gov. Wes Moore vetoed a bill to study reparations payments to the descendants of slaves, the leader of his state’s largest city wants the issue to be considered at the federal level.

Speaking to The Baltimore Sun during a news conference Wednesday, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said systemic inequalities from slavery still exist 160 years after its abolition. {snip}

“Anybody that doesn’t understand that African Americans in this country are owed a lot should really have a deeper thought,” Scott said. “When you think about the wealth in this country and you trace the origin of that wealth [for] so many of these families, so many of these corporations, it goes back to slavery. {snip}”
