Poland: Will PM Tusk resign following election loss of his left-wing candidate?

It is now certain. Karol Nawrocki is the next president of Poland. Both the web and within Polish media circles, there is now speculation about the future of Donald Tusk, with some describing the results as a huge defeat for the Polish prime minister. Are we therefore facing the resignation of the prime minister?

According to data from the National Electoral Commission, the second round of the presidential elections was won by the Law and Justice-supported civic candidate Karol Nawrocki from 100 percent of the districts. He won 50.89 percent of the votes. His rival, the Civic Coalition candidate Rafał Trzaskowski, was supported by 49.11 percent of citizens.

Presidential Elections 2025: Trzaskowski’s defeat Is the government’s defeat

Nawrocki’s victory has sparked a flood of questions about Tusk’s future.

“It is hard to imagine Tusk continuing as prime minister: Trzaskowski’s defeat is, above all, a defeat for the government. What is needed here is a new beginning and at least a declarative attempt at bearable cohabitation. Otherwise, in the fall, PSL will overturn the table and instead of a planned retreat, there will be a sudden BOOM,” wrote Michał Danielewski, editor-in-chief of OKO.press, on the X platform.

Patryk Słowik from Wirtualna Polska agreed with the assessment indicating the failure of Tusk’s government. “It is generally agreed that Trzaskowski’s defeat is primarily a defeat of Tusk and the government. Trzaskowski himself — if it were not for the government’s ratings, which are truly tragic — would have won these elections,” he stated.

In the journalist’s opinion, Tusk’s departure would in practice mean new elections. “There is not a single person in the entire government team who could hold the coalition together (as much as possible) and who could sometimes make a final decision that the coalition partners would not like. Only Kosiniak-Kamysz possibly, but KO did not win the elections to now give the prime minister’s portfolio to a person from a party whose support should be sought under a microscope,” he pointed out.

According to Słowik, there is a certain paradox, because “without Tusk there would be no chance for such a strong position of KO from 2023 (Tusk’s return to Poland literally saved KO from slow death), and at the same time Tusk is a burden today, which, however, cannot be gotten rid of, because everyone around him is marginalized.”

“Plus, simply changing the prime minister and remodeling the government will not make it function better. After all, the government knows perfectly well that, for example, it would be necessary to stop the bribing of state-owned companies. The problem is that they know, but they are too tempted,” he concluded.

Piotr Nisztor spoke in a similar tone to Danielewski. The journalist has no doubts: “Karol Nawrocki’s victory means one thing: Donald Tusk should resign.”

Trzaskowski has already declared victory. Dramatic turnaround in the elections

Sunday’s elections will go down in Polish political history, among other things, because of a dramatic turn of events. Initially, Rafał Trzaskowski was leading the race, as initial results indicated his victory.

The first poll results of the second round of the presidential election were announced at 9:00 p.m., right after the polls closed. The exit poll by Ipsos showed that Rafał Trzaskowski won 50.3 percent of the votes, and Karol Nawrocki won 49.7 percent. The Civic Coalition candidate had already announced victory and introduced his wife as the first lady.

Everything changed with the Ipsos late poll published at 11 p.m. It turned out that Karol Nawrocki had overtaken Rafał Trzaskowski, although the difference between them was still small. Nawrocki received 50.7 percent in this survey, and Trzaskowski, 49.3 percent. The statistical error of the survey is +/- 1 percentage point. Nawrocki’s advantage began to grow from that moment on, and his victory was confirmed by official data published by the National Electoral Commission.
