EU enraged with Polish voters: German MEP issues threatens to freeze EU funding if Nawrocki blocks ‘reforms’

German MEP Moritz Körner responded to Poland electing the conservative Karol Nawrocki president by threatening the country with a renewed freeze of EU funds if the new president vetoes laws seeking to restore the rule of law.

Posting on X, the German politician said that “the vote of confidence that Poland received after the parliamentary elections has been exhausted.”

“The grace period for solving the rule of law problems in Poland has ended. The Polish government must now pass all the laws that will restore the rule of law in Poland. If the newly elected president boycotts the necessary rule of law reforms with his veto, the EU will have to freeze funds for Poland again. Ursula von der Leyen must make it clear that if Poles want to continue the boycott policy, they will receive continued sanctions. The president is therefore to blame,” wrote the MEP.

The post sparked outrage across Poland. Polish MP Konrad Berkowicz responded on X.

“Moritz Körner – impudent MEP and Secretary General of the German FDP party (Hołownia’s coalition partner). He blackmails Poland,” wrote Berkowicz.

Filip Styczyński, the director of operations at the center for Intermarium Studies in Washington, wrote: “It is unacceptable to threaten to freeze Poland’s funds because of the democratic election of its representative. Such words from a German representative, whose country destroyed Poland and murdered 6 million of its citizens without ever taking responsibility, are an expression of not only arrogance, but also German neo-imperialism and racism. Shame on you, Mr. @moritzkoerner.”

The German politician’s post is not an isolated voice in the matter of a possible freeze of EU funds for Poland due to Nawrocki’s victory, writes Do Rzeczy. The German newspaper Die Tageszeitung estimates that the new president may boycott the current government.

“This could also put pressure on the EU, which gave Tusk a vote of confidence and released billions of euros from previously blocked funds. It is now clear that Tusk’s government will not be able to keep its promises of democratization. If Brussels were to turn off the money tap again, combined with Nawrocki’s boycott policy, this could lead to the fall of Tusk’s government and early elections,” says the newspaper’s correspondent Gabriele Lesser.

Die Tageszeitung also points out – in another article – that after Nawrocki’s victory, Warsaw’s current resistance to energy and migration policy will only intensify.
