Poland: Confederation MP says Nawrocki would not have won without their voters

Confederation MP Witold Tumanowicz told listeners on a Sunday Radio Zet program that Karol Nawrocki’s victory in Poland’s presidential election would not have been possible had he not convinced Confederation voters who had supported candidate and leader of New Hope Sławomir Mentzen in the first round, Do Rzeczy writes.

“Nawrocki convinced Mentzen and Confederation voters that he was critical of the PiS government in terms of Covid policy, migration, tax policy, and the Green Deal,” said Tumanowicz.

Asked if he believed Nawrocki was sincere about this, Tumanowicz replied, “I would like to believe that signing the eight points proposed by Sławomir Mentzen will be a kind of guide for him during his presidency. It means that he will veto laws that will be harmful to Poland.

Noting the trust that Confederation voters have placed in Nawrocki, the MP said, “They believed that Nawrocki could be a truly civic president.”

Between the first and second round of elections, Menzten hosted Nawrocki and Trzaskowski on his YouTube channel, with both conversations garnering huge viewership. The conversation with the PiS-supported candidate began with a series of “yes” or “no” questions.

When Mentzen asked Nawrocki if (former PiS prime minister) Morawiecki’s introduction of the New Deal was a mistake, the candidate replied, “Yes.”

“Was (PiS leader) Kaczyński wrong to claim that rejecting the European Green Deal would mean marginalizing ourselves?” Mentzen then asked. “The Green Deal is bad, it must be rejected,” Nawrocki replied, adding that Kaczyński was wrong in this matter.

Asked about the PiS government accepting 366,000 Muslim and African immigrants between 2018 and 2022, Nawrocki flatly said, “Accepting Muslim immigrants is always bad.”

During his interview with Mentzen, Nawrocki was also asked if the Confederation was right to oppose closing the economy during COVID. “Here we would have to talk longer,” he said, while still offering up a response. “The Confederation was certainly in the same situation as I was as a PiS voter. However, reviewing decisions is easier than making them, and whenever someone makes decisions under heavy pressure, they are worse off than those who review them,” he said.

Nawrocki negatively assessed the closing of churches and cemeteries, as well as the ban on entering forests, restaurants, etc. He emphasized that as a PiS voter, he was dissatisfied with this.
