Russian troops are on the offensive in the Dnipropetrovsk region, an area Putin has failed to take during the more than three years of war in Ukraine.
The new line of attack started last week, with Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling journalists on Monday that it is “partly aimed at creating a buffer zone in Ukraine.”
Battlefield reports indicate that the Russians are advancing towards Sumy near Dnipropetrovsk, while each side is continuously firing at the other using drones.
Meanwhile, Putin aide and Chairman of the Russian Maritime Collegium Nikolai Patrushev gave an interview over the weekend, announcing Russia’s new ambitious plan to expand its naval capabilities by 2050.
“Russia’s position as one of the world’s greatest maritime powers is gradually being restored,” he said.
“Russia’s naval power should be so that our country can effectively defend its interests in the World Ocean,” he added.
Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte has said that the alliance members must beef up defenses to counter Russian threats, calling for “a quantum leap” in defense spending.
“Danger will not disappear even when the war in Ukraine ends. We must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defense plans in full,” he said at Chatham House in London, as reported by the Kyiv Independent.
