It may seem like a contradiction, but Hungary, which rejects mass immigration overall, is a great place to head to if you are a self-sufficient entrepreneur, says the German online entrepreneur and digital nomad Alexander Schreiner. He breaks down why Hungary is a great destination spot for online entrepreneurs in a video profiled by Mandiner news portal.
“No matter how much the news can complain about Hungary, more and more Germans are being drawn to the country of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Why is that? Probably because Hungary is making policies, especially with refugees and the like, that many Germans want from their home country, but which is not happening. And that’s why they head to Hungary. But Hungary has many more advantages, which is why emigrating to Hungary makes perfect sense, but also requires some preparation,” he said during the introduction to his video.
Schreiner regularly recommends emigration destinations for young, wealthy Germans working online, according to the portal, but this time singles out Viktor Orbán’s Hungary for those who are “independent and economically strong.”
As he notes, “Hungary is pursuing exactly the policy on refugees and other issues that many Germans would expect from their country.”
At the top of his list of reasons for moving to Hungary is the country’s clear stance against wokeism and “mind-numbing LGBTQ things.”
“In Hungary, there are clear values such as family, nation and tradition. And of course many Germans appreciate that. Because let’s be honest, many Germans like this Western European culture and traditions that are in Hungary, you can still find them in Hungarian form, of course. But that’s something you can be proud of as a Hungarian. And of course many Germans appreciate that in a country where they go. That you don’t have this multiculturalism, this wokeness, this wokeness like in Germany, France and the like,” he adds.
He also cites how Orbán’s opposition to mass immigration began in 2015 and 2016, and that this opposition has inadvertently made life better for legal immigrants from other EU countries
“And of course, if you go there as a self-employed, economically strong, independent person, for example, that’s a huge advantage for you, because you come to a country where there are clear borders, clear laws and so on,” he said.
“Everyone knows what the facts are. And you don’t have to be afraid that you’ll be overrun by some North African rental nomads the day after tomorrow. To put it bluntly. That’s a huge advantage. And, of course, this also receives a great deal of support from conservative and liberal-oriented circles, which is why those conservative Germans and liberal-oriented Germans are also increasingly going in the right direction, and logically choosing Hungary,” he added.
He also notes a high degree of personal freedom, saying that even during the Covid crisis, there was “relatively little state re-education.”
He also says taxes in Hungary are low and far simpler compared to the multi-rate system in Germany, with corporate and personal income tax rates of 9 and 15 percent, respectively. Starting a business is also easier, he says, taking just three days. Schreiner also claims the cost of living is 40-50 percent lower than in Germany, with Budapest featuring low rents despite being “one of the top 100 innovation locations in the world.”
“A lot of people don’t even know about this, because on Tagesschau they constantly bash Orbán for being evil and racist – but Hungary knows a lot,” the Youtuber says, adding that he would definitely pick Hungary over Switzerland.
For those who want to start a business in Hungary, he points to the radically fast process.
“And when we talk about the next point, which is also going well in Hungary, when we talk about registering companies, it’s very simple. On average, you only need three days to set up a company if you do it properly. That’s what they do in Germany. The tax officer might have just picked up the phone and said Hello, what can I do for you? In other words, you can do this much, much faster in Hungary and there are also many tax incentives for entrepreneurs, for online business operators. If you want to be such a company, you can also take advantage of tax exemptions on license income, capital gains, various other incentives and so on. So there are tax options that are not familiar from Germany,” he says.
Listing some disadvantages, Schreiner calls into question the sustainability of some Hungarian policies, presumably lower taxes and state support schemes, given its dependency on EU funds. Also, he asks if such policies would continue were Orbán not the prime minister.
“The fact that you are a huge net beneficiary of EU funds, but you criticize pretty much everything that the EU does, is a contradiction in itself, and this will lead to a rupture at some point,” believes Alexander Schreiner.
He also bemoans the fact that employees in Hungary receive their salaries in the highly inflationary forint. And yet, for those working online and being paid in euros (which they then convert to forints), this can be an advantage.
Schreiner also admits that despite a terrible public media situation in his home country of Germany, people express the concern in Hungary that too much of its media is tied to the government.
