A statement from the Russian Defense Ministry says Israel’s attacks on Iran are illegal under international law and pose an unacceptable threat to international security
“Russia calls on the Israeli leadership to come to its senses and immediately cease attacks on nuclear facilities and installations,” it reads, adding that these attacks on “peaceful nuclear facilities in Iran” will lead to a nuclear catastrophe, reports Do Rzeczy.
The ministry further noted that Israel risks destabilizing the entire region, including Israel itself. It also called those countries supporting Netanyahu’s aggressive offensive “accomplices” of Israel and “opportunistic.”
“The harsh and uncompromising reaction of most countries in the world to Israeli attacks on Iranian territory, including on nuclear energy infrastructure, combined with the results of the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on June 13 and the special session of the IAEA Board of Governors on June 16 indicate that the confrontational course and destructive actions of the Israeli leadership are understood and supported only by those countries that are its actual accomplices and act for opportunistic reasons,” the document reads.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, these “sympathizers” forced the International Atomic Energy Agency’s leadership to prepare a “comprehensive assessment” of the Iranian nuclear program, the shortcomings of which they exploited to “force through” on June 12 a biased anti-Iran resolution of the IAEA Board of Governors, which untied Jerusalem’s hands and led to the tragedy.
“It is clear that attempts to manipulate the global nuclear non-proliferation system and use it to resolve political disputes with undesirable states are very costly to the international community and are completely unacceptable,” the statement said.
In the document, the ministry also expressed its expectation that “the Agency’s management will soon prepare a detailed written report for consideration by the IAEA Investigative Committee and the UN Security Council, containing objective and ‘impartial’ assessments of the damage caused by the Israeli military to the security of the Iranian nuclear complex, as well as the application of IAEA safeguards in Iran, including the intimidation of local inspectors whose lives were mortally threatened.”
The ministry also commented on Iran’s commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). “Russia notes the clear statements of the Iranian side about its continued commitment to fulfilling its obligations under the NPT and its readiness to resume contacts with the United States in order to develop possible solutions that will remove all groundless suspicions and prejudices regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, provided that Israeli attacks cease,” the statement continued.
Making a push for diplomatic talks to resume, the ministry concluded by saying: “Moscow supports this position and strongly believes that the desired solution can be reliably achieved only through diplomacy and negotiations. The goals of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, the fundamental basis of which is the NPT, cannot be achieved through aggression and at the cost of innocent victims.”
