Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage held a week-long arts festival in honor of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Polish Institute in Berlin advertised it as “a week of contemporary Polish art in Berlin – music, exhibitions, debates and more,” writes Do Rzeczy.
From June 16 to 23, visitors could enjoy the “interdisciplinary cultural event” featuring Polish contemporary and avant-garde art — from exhibits, audiovisual installations and performance art to debates and lectures — in multiple venues across the city,
The institute’s website said the event sought “to engage audiences and foster critical reflection on the role of culture in a rapidly developing Europe” as well as “foster lasting connections between artists and institutions from Poland and Berlin, while actively promoting Poland’s engagement in the broader European cultural dialogue.”
The program included four exhibitions, one of which was “Our Touch is the Touch of Feminists” by Ewa Partum and Mehtap Baydu.
On the opening day of the exhibition, in front of the Polish Institute in the very center of Berlin, artist Krzysztof Leon Dziemiaszkiewicz presented his performance during which he cut off his men’s suit, markered himself up, wrapped himself in tape with something stuck in his mouth, symbolically cut off a long-haired wig, and then, practically naked, he donned super high red platform heels. All of this was presented on top of a trash dumpster.
Dziemaszkiewicz’ Insta bio reads: “Berlin-based visual artist, using tape and body as basic material,” followed by a tribute to Thierry Mugler: “You stay forever in my heart.”
In one photo on his Instagram account, with Berlin Cathedral in the background, he captioned himself “This is Berlin #me in #dialogue #with Berlin Cathedral Dom.”
