At the NATO summit in the Hague, outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda talked to President of the United States Donald Trump, after which he announced that Karol Nawrocki will soon visit the White House himself.
“I believe that we can soon expect a visit of the new Polish president to the White House and a visit of the president of the United States to Warsaw. Of course, the dates will be set, but I assume that it will happen soon,” said Duda, as quoted by wPolityce.
Duda added that Trump may visit Warsaw soon as well.
In response to a journalist’s question as to what Duda may have told Nawrocki about the office of president, he said he told him the “obvious” thing, that “the duty of every president of the Republic is to strengthen Polish-American ties.”
Lauding the efforts he and others have made to reach what are considered the best Polish-U.S. relations in history, he said, “We have been doing this for years. I have been doing this for 10 years,” adding that what they have achieved fills him with pride.
Duda also thanked Trump for his efforts in defense and his leadership.
“Thank you, President Donald Trump, for your great leadership and key support for the initiative to increase defense spending. I am delighted that I have been part of the process when I proposed this solution at Trump Tower last year, “ the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland quoted Duda on X.
“I’m glad that the decision on increasing defense spending across all NATO member states has been taken unanimously! The Hague NATO Summit is truly historic. It makes the transatlantic bond stronger!” he added.
The 32 NATO countries at the summit discussed, among other things, the planned commitment of member states to spend 5 percent of GDP on security, comprised of 3.5 percent on defense and 1.5 percent on related issues, including civil defense and infrastructure.
Regarding the oft-mentioned Article 5 provision, Trump was also asked about this and expressed support. “We are with them until the end, NATO will be strong,“ he said when asked if the U.S. would in fact get involved if a NATO ally were to be attacked.
