More and more Poles are deciding to work after reaching retirement age, with women dominating among employed seniors.
Poland’s Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) has released the latest data, which shows that there are around 6.4 million retirees in Poland, and the number of working seniors is systematically growing.
Poles who decide to continue working after retiring benefit from both their retirement benefit and income from their job. Furthermore, by continuing to work, seniors actually can get a higher pension down the road, reports Do Rzeczy. Delaying retirement by just one year increases the amount of the benefit by 8 percent.
The number of working seniors is growing by several percent every year, while the percentage of those who decide to delay receiving their pension is increasing at a rate of one percent. Most take advantage of the right to a pension immediately after reaching the appropriate age.
Data from ZUS indicates that nearly four times more people of retirement age are deciding to work and receive benefits at the same time, instead of simply working without applying for a pension.
At the end of last year, 872,600 people with an established right to a pension and almost 53,000 people of retirement age who received various pensions (e.g., disability benefits) were legally gainfully employed.
Last year, almost 68 percent of those entitled applied for a pension immediately when they were entitled to it. In 2023, it was 69 percent, and in 2022, 70 percent.
Women in Poland can retire at the age of 60, and men at the age of 65, with women dominating among employed seniors. In the last five years, every 11th or 12th woman has received her first pension when she is at least 62 years old. Only 4 percent of men wait two years before doing so.
The government wants to encourage retirees to stay in the job market longer. One idea is a bonus of PLN 20,000. The amount would be added to retirement capital every year or paid with the first pension to seniors who decide to continue working after reaching retirement age.
