Missing Czech businessman presumed murdered in Croatia

Alex Burkov, a 38-year-old Czech businessman with Ukrainian roots, had gone missing in Croatia but is now reported as having been murdered. The suspect is a 51-year-old Slovak who is also the victim’s business partner, reports Echo24.

According to Croatian media, the Slovak suspect set off on a boat to the island of Molat with his business partner, the 38-year-old Czech citizen, on Sunday, June 22, at around 10:00 a.m. He allegedly planned to kill the businessman.

“The man was detained. However, the body of the missing person has not yet been found,” wrote the Novinky.cz.

The Czech police have not yet confirmed the information about the businessman’s murder. “We do not have any new information yet, the Croatian police are handling it. However, it is still true that our Directorate for International Police Cooperation is communicating with our Croatian colleagues,” Jozef Bocan, a spokesman for the Czech Police Presidium, told Seznam Zprávám.

According to Zpráv, the last person to see Burkov before his disappearance was another businessman living in the Czech Republic, Anton Fischer. He is a long-time diving instructor and was on the boat with Burkov on Sunday.

According to Czech media, Fischer, his son and his partner were charged by South Bohemian police last year with several crimes related to illegal billboards. The police are prosecuting them for, among other things, blackmail, intimidation and assaulting politicians and activists who spoke out against the illegal advertising offered by the Eurobillboard company along roads.

Fischer, who was previously given a suspended sentence for blackmail, has pleaded not guilty.
