After the first round of the Polish presidential election, Poles had the chance to explain the reasons behind their vote.
According to official results, in the first round of the election, the top results were garnered by Rafał Trzaskowski (31.36 percent), Karol Nawrocki (29.54 percent), Sławomir Mentzen (14.80 percent), Grzegorz Braun (6.34 percent), and Szymon Hołownia (4.99 percent).
In the second round between Karol Nawrocki and Rafał Trzaskowski, Nawrocki won the post of president with 50.89 percent versus the Warsaw mayor’s 49.11.
The Public Opinion Research Center (CBOS) conducted a survey May 26-28 on a sample of 1,000 respondents, reports Do Rzeczy, shedding light on Poles’ motivations for voting for one candidate over another.
Some 20 percent of PiS-backed Karol Nawrocki’s voters cited ideological and programmatic considerations, 14 percent said he was a “patriot,” “true Pole,” and “loves Poland,” another 8 percent cited his right-wing, conservative worldview, and 7 percent voted for him due to his Catholicism.
As for voters of the liberal, KO-backed Rafał Trzaskowski, 21 percent indicated that they were motivated by sharing similar views as the candidate. For 28 percent, competence, education and worldly experience were key, while 12 percent cited the KO candidate’s credibility and honesty.
For 39 percent of voters of Sławomir Mentzen (New Hope), the similarity of views was important, with 17 percent citing his economic program, and 21 percent saying he was a candidate outside the duopoly, a “true third way.”
Some 32 percent of far-right Grzegorz Braun’s voters supported him due to having similar views. For 24 percent. fighting for Polish issues was key, 7 percent indicated support for agriculture, and 4 percent gave him their vote due to his Christian values.
Another 18 percent called him a brave and truthful candidate (“not afraid to say what he thinks”), 11 percent said he was credible, 8 percent indicated various attributes (intelligent, reasonable, eloquent), 7 percent called him tough and decisive, and 12 percent said he represented the “Polish Donald Trump.”
For Poland 2050’s Szymon Hołownia, 36 percent of voters were motivated by similar views, with 8 percent attracted by his Christian values. Some 15 percent said he was moderate and balanced, 11 percent called him a likeable candidate, and 10 percent liked the fact that he was young and ambitious.
