Poland’s president-elect Nawrocki calls border situation with Germany ‘dire’, criticizes Tusk for calling citizen concerns ‘hysteria’

Incoming Polish President Karol Nawrocki told Polsat News the border with Germany is “leaky,” with residents complaining about the situation in Poland’s western regions, writes Do Rzeczy.

German police are actively transferring migrants to the country, and citizen’s patrols are being set up in border towns to protect Poland from illegal immigration, often resulting in clashes with German authorities.

“In my opinion, the situation is dire. I will not remain indifferent to it after Aug. 6. I will certainly convene the Cabinet Council. I will want to learn all the statistical data regarding illegal migrants,” announced the president-elect.

The situation is so worrisome that Nawrocki believes President Andrzej Duda may even convene the Cabinet Council earlier.

Polish services are not able to handle the incessant inflow of migrants from Germany, he says, and Poland should introduce border controls on its side.

Asked about the words of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Minister of Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak, who speak of “hysteria” regarding the border, Nawrocki replied that “Prime Minister Donald Tusk is a master at building and directing hysteria.”

“This is not hysteria. If during the six months of the election campaign, residents of towns in western Poland, such as Słubice, signalled to me such a thing that we are talking about today and which is unfortunately only gaining momentum,” he commented.

Noting that the situation is so out of control that local Poles are having to take action on their own, Nawrocki said, “If citizens from the Border Defense Movement are making efforts to counteract illegal migration (…), it means that the situation is not under the control of the state authorities today,” he argued.

The Tusk government, he added, is fully responsible for this situation. “There is no room for diplomacy here. I appeal to the Prime Minister (…) that this situation must be resolved,” said Nawrocki.
