Kyiv endured a prolonged aerial assault as numerous Russian drones and missiles struck the Ukrainian capital over several hours, which were launched shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Throughout the night, Russia launched an estimated 550 drones and missiles, causing widespread damage and fires.
Reports from eyewitnesses, alongside photographic and video evidence, depict extensive fires, large plumes of smoke, and numerous explosions across Kyiv.
At least 23 people have been injured, including 14 victims who were hospitalized, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Kyiv Insider labeled it the “largest attack of the war.”
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the deployment of a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile, considered one of the most potent weapons in Russia’s arsenal. Additionally, multiple waves of ballistic and cruise missiles targeted Kyiv and its surrounding areas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that 330 of the drones used were Iranian-made Shaheds.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski wrote on X in a message directed at Trump that “Putin is mocking your peace efforts. Please restore supplies of anti-aircraft ammunition to Ukraine and impose tough new sanctions on the aggressor.”
The Russian drone and missile strikes were launched mere hours after a phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Putin reportedly congratulated Trump on U.S. Independence Day.
On Tuesday, the White House announced that the United States would halt previously promised arms deliveries to Ukraine.
Donald Trump asserted that his predecessor, Joe Biden “emptied out our whole country, giving them weapons, and we have to make sure we have enough for ourselves.”
During their phone call, President Putin affirmed that the war in Ukraine would persist. Yuri Ushakov, an advisor to Putin, conveyed the Russian president’s statement that “Russia would achieve its stated goals of eliminating the causes that led to the current situation. Russia will not abandon those targets.”
The discussion also encompassed the situation in the Middle East, with both Putin and Trump reaffirming their “mutual interest” in pursuing “promising economic projects.”
