Major power outage hits large parts of Czechia, disrupting transport and trapping people in elevators

A large-scale power outage struck significant parts of the Czech Republic on Thursday, severely affecting Prague and several regions, including Liberec, Ústí nad Labem, and Central Bohemia

Public transport across the affected areas has been severely disrupted, and emergency services are responding to multiple incidents linked to the outage.

In Prague, tram, metro, and bus services were halted across the entire right-bank area of the city. The outage, which began just before noon, initially shut down all metro lines. By 12:15, services on lines A and C were restored, but many tram lines and bus services remained suspended.

Firefighters in Prague are dealing with a high number of emergency calls. “We now have a lot of cases where we are currently responding to various locations around Prague for these reasons,” said Prague Fire Department spokesman Miroslav Řezáč. Many incidents involve people trapped in elevators, and reports of smoke from diesel generators activating inside buildings.

The Liberec region was also heavily affected. Electricity is out in Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Česká Lípa, Nový Bor, and the Frýdlantský výběžek. Trams are not running in Liberec, although buses continue to operate, according to transport company spokeswoman Martina Poršová.

Czech Railways confirmed that no trains are running on several routes, including between Prague and Kolín, Prague and Benešov u Prahy, and Kolín and Kutná Hora.

According to energy companies, the outage originated at the Chodov substation operated by ČEPS, the country’s transmission system operator. The company stated that technicians are working to resolve the issue, but the cause has not yet been determined, and the duration of repairs remains uncertain.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala addressed the situation on social media, stating, “Some areas of the Czech Republic have been affected by a power outage. We are investigating the causes and resolving the problem. The Central Crisis Staff is on standby.”

Health Minister Vlastimil Válek sought to reassure the public about healthcare services, confirming that hospitals have activated backup generators and that patient care is not at risk, though some non-urgent examinations may be postponed.

The outage continues to cause widespread disruption while technicians work to restore power.
