After Polish MEP Braun calls gas chambers in Auschwitz a ‘fake,’ PM Tusk questions why law enforcement hasn’t taken action

Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to questions bout MEP Grzegorz Braun’s remarks in which he called the gas chambers in Auschwitz a “fake.” Braun is known for his controversial statements and actions, including towards Jews, but remains a popular politician in Poland.

During a Radio Wnet interview, Braun stated that “ritual murder is a fact, and let’s say Auschwitz with its gas chambers is unfortunately a fake.”

The interview was shut down after that, and now PM Tusk has commented on the matter, stating that Braun has an “anti-Semitic obsession” and appealing to the president and the PiS chairman not to ally with figures like the leader of the Confederation of the Polish Crown.

Braun, the prime minister continued, “is not the first and will not be the last” to say such things. “We also saw this at the border recently, in Zamość there were some unpleasant scenes, attacks on people of different skin color,” the prime minister said, as cited by Do Rzeczy

Tusk indicated that he was “irritated” when the prosecutor’s office, the police, or the Marshal’s Guard failed to respond to MEP Braun’s actions with sufficient efficiency and boldness. “I won’t issue an order to a police officer at the scene, but my recommendation is to act firmly and decisively, without regard for the position of those who break or violate the law,” he argued.

Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance has also come out condemning the far-right nationalist’s words.

“The Institute of National Remembrance strongly condemns Grzegorz Braun’s words denying the well-documented facts regarding German crimes committed against Jews during World War II, in particular in the German ‘death factory’ Auschwitz. Such statements harm the memory of the victims of the Holocaust,” the statement read.

“Anyone who is ready to call themselves a Polish patriot must show the good face of Polish patriotism, and there can be no acceptance, agreement, or political games around these matters, because we will all be ashamed for the rest of our lives that there are people among us who do such things,” said Donald Tusk.

“I appeal to President Duda and Chairman Kaczyński not to flirt or play into this nasty atmosphere created by people like Braun, Bąkiewicz, or other political players,” he said.

Anna Maria Żukowska of the New Left announced she will file a motion with the prosecutor’s office for the crime of “publicly denying the crimes committed by the German occupiers during World War II.”

The prosecutor’s office has now commented on MEP Braun as well.

“The District Prosecutor’s Office for Warsaw Śródmieście-Północ is conducting an investigation into Grzegorz Braun’s denial of Nazi crimes committed at the Auschwitz concentration camp during a radio broadcast, an act under Article 55 of the Act on the Institute of National Remembrance,” they said in a statement.

Known for his anti-Semitic, homophobic, and nationalist views, Braun, a self-proclaimed Catholic monarchist, managed to secure 6.3 percent in the first round of Poland’s presidential election in May.
