‘The Ukrainian president clearly treats Hungary and the Hungarian people as enemies,’ says Hungarian foreign minister Szijjártó

No matter how Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky threatens, Hungary does not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Budapest on Tuesday.

According to the ministry’s statement, the minister, responding to Zelensky’s speech at the Ukrainian ambassadors’ meeting the previous day, highlighted at his press conference that “the president of Ukraine has an extremely hostile view of Hungary, the Hungarian nation, and the Hungarians living in Transcarpathia.”

“He clearly treats Hungary and the Hungarian people as enemies. This has become clear to everyone over the past many years, as the rights of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia have been taken away and trampled on for many years,” he said.

“These legal provisions have led to the fact that today a church is being burned down, a Hungarian person is being beaten to death because he does not want to go to war, does not want to participate in a senseless killing. From this perspective, this threat from President Zelensky only confirms that he views us as an enemy,” he continued.

The video of the Hungarian man, József S., who was beaten to death after being conscripted into the Ukrainian army, has shocked Hungary. The incident has only worsened tensions between the two nations in recent weeks.

One of the main points of conflict is Hungary’s continued refusal to allow Ukraine to be admitted to the EU.

“I would like to make it clear that no matter how President Zelensky threatens, Hungary does not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. No matter how much he threatens, no matter how much he blackmails, no matter how much he tries to blackmail Brussels, the vote of two million people in Voks 2025 represents an obligation for the Hungarian government,” said Hungary’s foreign minister.
