Early elections are likely in Poland and the stage is being set for the left’s next PM candidate, says top conservative politician

A top politician from Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party believes early elections are possible, and speculates that Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski will run for prime minister in the future.

“I believe early elections are possible. If I had to bet, I’d bet heavily on them being held earlier than 2027,” Przemysław Czarnek, vice president of the Law and Justice party, told DoRzeczy.

When asked whether such elections would benefit PiS, Czarnek replied: “Today, we’re not talking about benefits for Law and Justice, but about benefits for the state. We don’t live in a time of complete peace, where we can wait another two years and then rebuild what was lost. We live in a time of direct external and internal threats. Therefore, every day this government remains in power represents a grave danger for Poles. Therefore, it’s not in the interest of Law and Justice; it’s in the interest of the state,” said Czarnek.

The politician, who is a powerful voice in PiS, already stated this week that his party is open to coalitions with parties further to the right, including MEP Grzegorz Braun’s party.

Tusk’s coalition has steadily dropped in the polls since mid-2024. The latest polling from the CBOS puts the opposition at 48 percent, while the government coalition’s support has held steady at 32 percent. Now, Tusk has reshuffled his cabinet to stave off the clear lead of the right; however, the situation currently looks bleak for the liberal prime minister.

When asked about the government reshuffle, Czarnek replied: “My expectation is that this government will finally collapse and cease to harm Poland. Any changes within the Council of Ministers are insignificant. The fact that Sikorski will become deputy prime minister is irrelevant to the overall assessment of the government, which is harming Poland.”

Czarnek says that Sikorski’s promotion will undoubtedly strengthen his position in the government. When asked if it was setting the stage for Tusk stepping down as prime minister, the PiS politician replied: “Yes, that’s exactly how I see it. This is the direction Sikorski will take to become prime minister in the future.”

However, he does not believe this would help the Civic Coalition government, saying: “No. These are the last twitches (before death) and the sharpest ones.”
