After announcing with great fanfare that it would welcome refugees from Gaza to France, the ministry of foreign affairs has decided to put the plan on hold. The reason for this is the arrival of a student from Gaza whose violently antisemitic comments led the university that was supposed to host her to cancel her enrollment.
As we reported, on July 11th, Nour Atallah, a 25-year-old student from Gaza, arrived in France with the intention of studying at the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) in Lille from September. Following the discovery on social media of an account in the young woman’s name explicitly calling for the killing of Jews and glorifying Hitler, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau instructed the prefect to refer the matter to the courts, describing her comments as “unacceptable” and “worrying.” “Hamas propagandists have no place in our country,” he said. The university eventually cancelled the student’s enrollment. Nour Atallah is now under investigation for glorifying terrorism. Her account has since been closed.
Presented as a ‘refugee’ by the press, Nour Atallah did not, however, have time to submit an application for political asylum. She is in France as a student, thanks to a visa granted to her by the consul general of Jerusalem. The withdrawal of her visa is administratively easy to achieve. The next problem will be where to send Nour Atallah: which country will take her? Jordan has already announced that it will not accept her for more than 72 hours. Egypt is expected to take the same stance.
An investigation must be carried out to determine the route that led the young woman to be admitted to French territory. The Quai d’Orsay and the ministry of the interior, which share responsibility for visa management, are shifting the blame onto each other. “All profiles [of people] that have entered France will be subject to further verification following the security screening failures that led this young woman, who has no place in France, to find herself on national territory,” said Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
This case proves the inconsistency of the hasty decisions taken by the French administration in recent weeks, which have subsequently required corrections and backtracking, such as the decision to welcome refugees from Gaza. Nour Atallah took advantage of this announcement to come to France and thus trap the authorities. The French Right had warned in vain of the adverse effects of this unconditional welcome. Caught up in reality, the foreign minister has now been forced to temporarily halt all evacuations of Gazans to France.
At the same time, other Palestinian ‘refugees’ are attracting attention. Their reception in France is causing outrage, as is the case with journalist Fady Hossam Hanona, employed by the editorial staff of the France 2024 channel.. In 2022, the New York Times had ceased all collaboration with Hanona due to antisemitic tweets calling for ‘finishing Hitler’s work.’ Despite that, on July 25th he was exfiltrated from the Gaza Strip with the help of the Quai d’Orsay and welcomed in Paris.
