Europeans have become so tired of their politicians failing—and in many cases not even bothering to try—to stop illegal migration that they are increasingly taking matters into their own hands.
Most recently, locals and tourists enjoying a Sunday afternoon at a crowded beach in Spain’s Castell de Ferro sprung to action after 13 men—reportedly from Morocco—jumped from a boat just offshore. Several of these were tackled and held to the ground until the authorities arrived. Nine were eventually taken into custody and the other four likely escaped into the town.

Polish farmers also last month joined a growing ‘Civic Border Defense Movement’ to stop Germany’s unlawful migrant dumping operations. As a result, they have been branded “far right.”
A piece in Spain’s leftist El País newspaper also said that those who detained the “frightened” and “exhausted” migrants had played into the hands of the far right.
Likewise in the Netherlands, citizens have gathered near the border with Germany to stop cars and conduct asylum seeker checks themselves. Geert Wilders has hailed these checks as a “fantastic initiative.”
After the authorities eventually arrived at the beach in Castell de Ferro and detained most of the new arrivals, they claimed to have done the “bulk of the work.” Officials also stressed that beach landings are uncommon in Spain, even though there is plenty of illegal movement elsewhere.
Belgian politician Filip Dewinter said this public intervention shows voters are “more than fed up with illegal mass immigration.”
One Spanish police official suggested on social media that the vessel carrying the migrants was actually a “narcoboat,” though this has not been picked up by local or national media.
