Indiana Prepping ‘Speedway Slammer’ Similar to ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

A new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility is set to open in Indiana, dubbed “Speedway Slammer,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a post to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday.

Noem said the Miami Correctional Facility in the Hoosier State’s Bunker Hill is poised to expand capacity by 1,000 beds and house “the worst of the worst.”

The announcement came just a month after the ICE facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz” launched in Florida.

Noem has called Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz a model for similar centers nationwide, saying that five states are in “ongoing conversations” with DHS to develop related sites.

Since the center’s opening, there has been outrage from politicians, detainees and civilians regarding the facility’s conditions, with some in custody waging a hunger strike in protest.

Speedway Slammer will be the second such high-capacity site, according to Noem.

The announcement comes as part of the Trump administration’s push for rapid increases in detention space, with a reported $45 billion included in congressional appropriations to fund these efforts, Newsweek previously reported.

The Florida center, constructed in just eight days under the authority of Governor Ron DeSantis, holds 500 to 1,000 beds and could expand up to 3,000.

In an August 1 statement from Indiana Republican Governor Mike Braun’s office, the state laid out its plan to work with ICE to also make other sites available, such as Camp Atterbury.

“Indiana is not a safe haven for illegal immigration. Indiana will fully partner with federal immigration authorities as they enforce the most fundamental laws of our country,” the statement reads in part.

Democratic State Representative Victoria Garcia Wilburn of Fishers, Indiana, in a statement to Newsweek via email on Tuesday: “Just last week, a Purdue University student – one of many international students embracing Indiana as their academic home – was following all necessary steps to renew her visa when she was detained as she exited her hearing in New York.

“This is about instilling fear in immigrant communities and making light of grave moments with phrases like ‘Speedway Slammer.’ Indiana welcomed over 30,000 new residents by way of international migration contributing to our workforce talent, economy, and agriculture industry. We are a stronger state because of immigrants.
