The Senate has banned the wearing of the Australian flag after the Greens complained about a patriotic senator draping one over her shoulders on National Flag Day.
Liberal senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price was partway through a speech condemning the burning of the flag on Wednesday when Greens senator Nick McKim asked for a ruling on whether she was violating a rule against “props”.
“I do want to make the point that if it’s okay for Senator Nampijinpa Price to wrap herself in this flag I would intend to wrap myself in a Palestinian flag and come into the chamber and exercise the same rights that Senator Nampijinpa Price is currently exercising,” he said.
Deputy President Slade Brockman, a Liberal senator from Western Australia, then asked Ms Nampijinpa Price to remove the flag from her shoulders, saying “we do not want to set a precedent in this place that will have very unfortunate consequences in the future”.
Labor Senate President Sue Lines later upheld the Deputy President’s decision until it can be referred to the Procedure Committee for a final ruling.
On National Flag Day, @JNampijinpa walked into the Senate Chamber draped in the Australian flag. It was a simple and proud gesture to honour our nation’s flag and everything it represents.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson then moved a motion to let senators wear the flag, but it was shut down by Labor and the Greens.
“They called it a ‘prop’. They mocked it. And they made it clear: They don’t respect our flag. They don’t respect what it stands for. And they certainly don’t respect the Australians who do,” Ms Hanson said.
Ms Nampijinpa Price also slammed the ruling, saying: “So disappointing from the Greens, but sadly typical. Allowed to wear a keffiyeh in the chamber – but not our national flag.
“Once again, the Greens prove they don’t love this country the way most Australians do, nor respect the indigenous Australians they claim to speak for.”
Australian Taxpayers Alliance Executive Director and CitizenGo Australia campaigner Brian Marlow told Noticer News the flag ban was a “disgrace”, but that he feared unelected anti-Australian left-wing Canberra bureaucrats would uphold it in their final ruling.
The Senate President has chosen to do the bidding of the extreme left Greens who despise Australia. On National Flag Day, a patriot proudly wore our flag into the chamber, only for the Greens to complain and demand it be banned, and the President sided with them,” he said.
“The Australian flag already flies inside the chamber, yet senators are now being told they cannot wear it. That is a disgrace and it is anti-Australian to stop patriots from supporting their country on the one day set aside to honour our flag.
“Every Australian should be alarmed that our Parliament bends so quickly to the demands of a fringe party that wants to wave foreign flags instead of showing respect for our own.
“Just days after the hugely successful March for Australia, where ordinary Australians stood tall for their nation, we now see the Greens and the Senate President working hand in glove to shut down even the sight of our flag in the chamber. The mask is off.”
