A large majority of women in Amsterdam stay away from certain parts of the city at night because they feel unsafe, a new survey by local broadcaster AT5 shows.
Out of more than 2,100 residents polled, 85% of women and 70% of all respondents said there are places they deliberately avoid after dark. Parks such as Vondelpark, Sarphatipark, and Oosterpark were mentioned most often, along with industrial estates, bicycle underpasses, shopping streets after hours, and areas around train stations.
On average, residents rated their sense of safety at night at six out of ten. Half said they had faced harassment or threats on the street, yet most incidents went unreported to police.
More than half of those surveyed felt the police presence in the city was inadequate, with some blaming the disappearance of neighborhood officers for leaving residents feeling abandoned.
These findings reflect a broader trend in the Netherlands: a previous study found that nearly half of young women across the Netherlands regularly avoid areas in their own neighborhoods after dark that they perceive as unsafe, with women of all ages taking extra precautions on the streets and at home compared with men.
