A 21-year-old man with a mobility disability was left for dead after being savagely beaten by a group of young men of North African origin outside a nightclub in Sanremo, Italy, over the weekend.
The victim, from Alba in Piedmont, had been waiting for a bus with two friends when the group of four attackers surrounded them on Via Gioberti near the Sanremo seafront in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The two friends managed to flee, but the 21-year-old was knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked as he lay helpless. Witnesses said his face was left completely bruised. At one point, one of the assailants reportedly shouted in French, “Okay, he’s dead!” and took a photo of the motionless victim as a trophy before fleeing.
A local resident captured the beating on his mobile phone, and the footage helped police identify three of the alleged perpetrators, aged between 18 and 21 and residing in Monaco. They were arrested on Wednesday, while a fourth attacker is still being sought.
As reported by Il Giornale, the suspects claimed the attack was a “settling of scores” over a punch one of them allegedly received as they left the club, but investigators remain unconvinced by this version of events.
The three young men are being held in the Valle Armea prison and are facing charges of grievous bodily harm.
The victim is recovering in the hospital with a fractured jaw and severe facial trauma, and doctors have given him a 45-day prognosis for recovery.
His condition is serious but not life-threatening.
