Britons Join the Hundreds of Thousands of Europeans Protesting Open Border Policies

Voters are no longer keeping their grumblings about mass uncontrolled migration to themselves. In London—like in WarsawDublinMadrid and elsewhere across Europe, as well as beyond even that—they are taking their complaints to the streets.

More than 100,000 people marched through the city on Saturday—the actual number is, as always, deeply contested—for the so-called ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally, which was also about coming together in support of such issues as free speech.

London’s Metropolitan Police said that 26 of its officers were injured at the march, which was organised by Tommy Robinson, best known for being the founder of the English Defence League. Others involved in its organisation have fallen foul of the political mainstream.

But as Labour MP Clive Lewis put it, many of those present were there “to feel part of something bigger,” not for the official speakers. He added that “pretending they’re all racists or fascists would be a massive mistake.”

Reform leader Nigel Farage also said during a press conference on Monday that the march, as well as the putting up of English flags around the country, “is a collective two fingers up to a British establishment that [voters] feel utterly betrayed by in every single way.”

Voters in other parts of Europe likewise feel betrayed, such as in Poland, where marches under the slogan ‘Stop Immigration’ took place in 80 cities in July.

Action elsewhere has been specifically triggered by events which activists say were caused by open border policies, for example in the Spanish town of Alcalá de Henares in July following the arrest of a young Malian immigrant accused of raping a Spanish woman the month before.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he believes “people have a right to peaceful protest” but called out assaults on police officers at the ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally. He added that Britain was “proudly built on tolerance, diversity and respect” and “we will never surrender [its flag] to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear and division.”
