A young woman from Bilbao says she has been abandoned by Spain’s institutions and re-victimized online after the Malian migrant she accused of raping her last year fled the country. She has accused the anti-immigration Vox party of politicizing her ordeal to stir up racial hatred.
The assault, according to her account to El Correo, took place on Sept. 8, 2024. The woman, identified as Izaro, said she met the Malian national for drinks and later accepted his help when she felt unwell. She said he led her to “a place away from public view, without cameras,” and raped her. “It was a black spot in the city center. I’m sure he planned it,” she said.
Friends who came to help her stopped a police patrol, and the suspect was detained shortly afterward. Local police issued a press statement describing the arrest, and Bilbao’s city government also released a message expressing solidarity with the victim and offering municipal support.
“I was not protected at any point when I presented my case to the media,” she said, as cited by El Mundo. “I found out because my mother heard about it on the news. The city council has never contacted me either. They don’t follow through on anything they say. They do it all for show.”
A first judge decided the case should proceed, but imposed no restrictions on the accused. A second judge required him to report to court every two weeks, but again did not confiscate his passport. “He hadn’t been in attendance the last time he was scheduled to be in the courtroom,” she said, later finding out her alleged attacker had fled to his homeland. “I was in shock,” she said.
After she shared this publicly, the Basque branch of Vox wrote on X: “This is how these scoundrels operate. They commit their crimes, spend barely a few hours in the police station, and when danger looms, they disappear. We urgently need to close borders, even more so to eradicate this irrational do-gooderism. A firm hand, or the system will never work.”
Rather than solely directing her criticism toward the left-wing parties facilitating the arrival of such men, or the leniency of the judiciary in enabling his escape, Izaro took aim at the Vox party advocating for greater border security and more effective law and justice.
“My case is a summary of how to do things wrong when a woman reports a rape: your case of sexual assault is publicized, although without giving any information about me, but without even telling me whether I approve of it or not; the rapist’s passport is not taken away when it is known that, whenever he wants, he can go back to his country of origin; and, finally, a political party uses your story to spread racist junk propaganda,” she told the Spanish news outlet.
Izaro, who revealed she has been diagnosed with PTSD following the attack, said she decided to speak publicly because she does not want her story used for political ends. “Vox is going too far with me,” she said. “They’ve issued a statement saying that we need to close the borders. I’m not against foreigners; I’m against people who commit crimes, wherever they’re from. I don’t want anyone to link me to Vox or for that party to use me in their racist rhetoric.”
The figures, however, show an undeniable link between foreigners and rape, which soared to a record high in Spain last year with 5,206 incidents, or 14 reported rapes per day.
Remix News reported in November last year on a La Rázon report that revealed 91 percent of those convicted of rape in Catalonia are foreigners, with immigrants comprising just 17 percent of the region’s total population. Similarly, the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE) from 2022 showed that 46 percent of all sexual offenses are committed by foreigners across the country — a deeply disproportionate figure not commensurate with the percentage of the population.
“You meet someone, you like them, they take you out because you trust them… But they end up raping you, and since then, everyone who’s supposed to understand, care for, and protect you has been taking steps in the opposite direction, Izaro said.
“The last thing I needed was Vox. Seeing myself involved in that dirty game has made me feel re-victimized.”
