Indian landlord charged over alleged axe murder of tenant in Melbourne

An Indian mother who recently moved in Australia has allegedly been murdered her landlord at the home she rented from him in Melbourne.

Jaswinder Gill, 50, from Rockbank, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday via videolink after being charged with a single count of murder on Friday, the Herald Sun reported.

His alleged victim, 44-year-old Rajwinder Kaur, was found dead by her son inside their two-storey home on Gottloh St in the suburb of Epping just before 6pm on Thursday.

CCTV obtained by 7 News shows a man wearing a white hazmat suit and a dark-coloured hat, who police allege is Gill, arriving at the home and then leaving in a hi-vis outfit 27 minutes later.

Homicide detectives told the court Mr Gill switched cars on Thursday morning, driving a maroon Toyota Camry with number plates removed to the home, and allegedly changing into the hazmat suit inside.

Police allege Gill fatally struck Ms Kaur in the head with an unknown weapon, believed to be an axe.

The court heard that a DNA sample, police bodycam footage and CCTV would be central to the case against Gill, who did not apply for bail.

Ms Kaur’s son ran to a nearby home for help after finding his mother’s body, and the neighbour told the Herald Sun the family were new to Australia, and were of Indian descent but had moved from Italy.

Gill will face court again in February.
