Thousands of anti-immigration protesters took to the streets of Amsterdam on Sunday demanding the closure of refugee centres and holding a banner saying “Defend Netherlands”.
The march was organised by a group called Netherlands in Uprising and proceeded peacefully along a designated route amid a large police presence, according to local media reports.
Photos and videos of the march show some protesters setting off flares, holding flags saying “send them back”, and taking part in chants including “get rid of asylum centres” and “we are The Netherlands”.
The protest was attended by American YouTuber Hermes, who shared a clip of the march and said “it’s nice to see things are happening here in Europe”.
He also posted a video of protesters marching with a banner saying “Pro White, anti Israel”.

The demonstration began at midday at the Museumplein, and ended with speeches before some attendees moved on to the city centre where some arrests were made later in the afternoon.
“Several arrests were also made for offences including insults, vandalism, and public disorder,” police said.
“The rest of the group was escorted by police to another location in the city.”
Far-left extremists held a counter-protest nearby with several hundred in attendance, but they were unable to disrupt the nationalist event, which they called a “festival of hate”.
A similar rally held last month in The Hague ended in violence, with protesters setting police cars on fire, attacking the office of left-wing party D66, and pelting police with bottles.
The demonstrations come ahead of a snap election scheduled for October 29, sparked by Party For Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders quitting the governing right-wing coalition after his proposal to completely stop so-called asylum migration was rejected by his partners.
