A Change of Scene for Syrian Refugees?

The war in Syria ended in December 2024 and political persecution has reportedly ceased. Is this significantly affecting the status and return options of Syrian immigrants in Europe?

Over the past 14 years around 4.5 million Syrians fled the country, of which only about one million have already returned mainly to neighboring Middle Eastern countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

“I am confident that within two years, 14 million displaced Syrians will return. Only about 1.5 million will remain abroad,” declared President Ahmed al-Sharaa in January 2025, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

Now European states claim to be gradually halting the processing of Syrian asylum applications, reducing opportunities for newly arrived refugees and preparing deportations primarily targeting rejected applicants and those without legal status.
