‘Fake Chinese cop’ arrested in Sydney over alleged international student scam

A female Chinese immigrant who alleged posed as a police officer as part of a scam targeting international students has been arrested in Sydney and extradited to Queensland.

The 24-year-old woman was apprehended by detectives from the Queensland Police Service Cyber Crime Unit, NSW Police Cybercrime Unit and NSW Police Public Order Response Squad at a unit in the inner-city suburb of Ultimo on Wednesday.

She was then flown to Queensland on Thursday to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday charged with fraud offences, Queensland Police said, and images from the arrest show a Chinese Communist Party ID, a fake Interpol ID, and the woman being taken into custody.

The arrest came as a result of an investigation into “Chinese authority and law enforcement” impersonation scams targeting international students in Queensland, and police are calling for any students who believe they have been a victim of crime to come forward.

Police allege one student was contacted and told they were linked to serious offences before put in touch with a person claiming to be a Chinese police officer.

The student was then allegedly threatened with prosecution and deportation, and allegedly coerced into handing over money and setting up bank accounts.

Detectives from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group, with assistance from the NSW Police Cybercrime Unit and Australian Border Force, then tracked the alleged fake cop down and the arrest was made, police said.
