A Gambian minor has been arrested in Bologna after allegedly attempting to kidnap a newborn baby from a stroller on Via Carracci, near the city’s high-speed train station, on Sunday, October 19.
According to reports from Corriere della Sera, the 17-year-old, who is living in a community center for unaccompanied minors, suddenly reached into a stroller and tried to take the baby, despite the presence of both parents and several witnesses.
The child’s mother and father immediately intervened, shouting for help as others nearby rushed to assist, preventing the abduction.
The baby girl, who was strapped into the stroller, was unharmed. The suspect fled the scene but was located and apprehended minutes later in Villa Angeletti park by police officers responding to the parents’ call.
Authorities said the suspect resisted arrest and now faces charges of attempted kidnapping and resisting a public official. Police confirmed that he has no previous criminal record.
Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the boy may have mental health issues, though no medical documentation has yet been presented. He had been residing in a shared accommodation for unaccompanied migrant minors in the city.
Because both the suspect and the victim are minors, officials have withheld further details.
The SIULP police union praised officers from the Bolognina-Pontevecchio station for their quick response, noting that cooperation between police and citizens was essential to the arrest.
“Thanks to the timely reporting to the Operations Center and the description provided, the patrols in the area quickly coordinated, managing to locate and arrest the perpetrator after a brief chase. The cooperation of citizens was essential, in addition to the minors’ parents,” the union stated in a post on Facebook.
Prosecutors are continuing to investigate the motive behind the act. The baby has since returned home safely with her parents.
