A shocked Melbourne man who was assaulted by an aggressive African has blasted Victoria Police for not turning up when he called Triple-Zero, and then refusing to investigate afterwards.
The man said the attack took place on October 18 at the corner of Smith and Peel Streets in Fitzroy, where he was minding his own business and texting when a stranger twice his size stopped in front on him on his bike and violently grabbed his shirt, causing a scuffle that resulted in both falling to the ground.
Two other men then got out of a car to assist the attacker, wrongly believing the victim was trying to steal his bike, but the thug then turned on them, grabbing one by the neck before hurling abuse and riding off on his bike.
One of the men said he would be a witness, so the victim, who had filmed the confrontation between the African man and the witnesses, called Triple-Zero and was told to wait where he was for police to arrive.
“I waited 30 minutes before they finally called again and told me they were pretty busy and if it was okay to go to a station, I said yes and asked where, they told me to go to Fitzroy Police Station,” he wrote on Reddit.
“I got in one witness’s car and we headed to the station (pretty close) only to find out that the station was closed (which is crazy for a Saturday night too). We got lucky because there were two police officers just getting out of the station to lock it.
“I told them my situation and honestly the cops just seemed annoyed. He called his radio, and after a bit of back and forth, took down our details and contact info. I asked if he wanted me to forward the video somewhere and he said no, didn’t even bother to look at it and told me that they’ll be in touch.”
The man went on to say that five days later he had still not received a call, text or email from the police, and the experience had left him fearing for his safety in public.
“It’s been making me paranoid and extra wary of everything around me and the cops not even doing anything is making me even more scared,” he said.
His post attracted hundreds of comments, with many sharing their own stories of Victoria Police acting in similar ways.
“I’ve been a victim of a similar situation. This is a very common occurrence. A lot of people have this fairy tale notion of Vicpol that they’ll come lights and sirens for situation like this but in reality, unless the person is armed, they won’t even bother coming for an assault. They’ll just make a report and that’s it,” they said.
“Our streets are being taken over by these violent deranged junkie types and it’s just going to get worse due to the ‘let’s do nothing, that will fix it’ policies of government and Vicpol. We won’t be far off San Francisco’s situation.”
“Victorian police are useless. Had someone steal expensive farming machinery from a site I manage. Called the police, they sounded openly annoyed about having to do their job,” said another.
“After multiple follow ups by me I gave up, and haven’t heard from them in over a year. So yeah, Vic police are fucked. But hey we got machete bins so it’s all good now.”
“You should have said the guy in the picture is you. They might have helped you,” said a third.
