A 20-year-old man was shot dead early Sunday morning on Flying Dutchmanstraat in the Rotterdam district of IJsselmonde. Police arrested five suspects. The same street saw two explosions earlier this year at a luxury home.
Rijnmond noted the shooting was reported around 6:30 a.m. Police and emergency services responded in large numbers, with two ambulances and a trauma helicopter dispatched to the scene. The victim was resuscitated on the street and taken to hospital, where he later died. According to police, he was a 20-year-old man from Rotterdam with no fixed address.
The five suspects are reported as being three men from Rotterdam aged 18, 21, and 24, a 20-year-old man from Krimpen aan den IJssel, and a 17-year-old boy from Capelle aan den IJssel.
It was the second shooting in Rotterdam this weekend. A man was killed on the Zevenkampse Ring between Friday night and Saturday morning, prompting renewed concern about ongoing violence in the city.
Residents of IJsselmonde say the area has changed sharply in recent years. Richard, who has lived there for years, said he heard a bang on Sunday morning. “My daughter suddenly said, ‘There’s been a shot, there’s someone lying in the street,’” he told De Telegraaf newspaper. “I saw a car and boys running away. I told the police, ‘There they are, heading towards the main street.’ Then one of them came over to say hello. I thought, ‘Yes, there’s someone there.’”
Police later found a machete in nearby bushes. “They found that. I was quite shocked,” Richard said. “Bombs have already been dropped here twice at number 32. It used to be a really nice neighborhood, but since that apartment complex was built, it’s not fun anymore. It’s commonplace.”
He said he is now considering moving. “I will look into moving. Maybe to Zeeland or Brabant. Just because of this. It used to be quiet here. Not anymore.”
Other residents say the atmosphere has worsened since the construction of a nearby apartment complex. “It’s gotten worse in the last year and a half or so,” said one man who wished to remain anonymous. “This used to be a nice neighborhood. Now it’s just become a disaster.”
Mr. and Mrs. Rog, who have lived in the area for over 25 years, said similar things. “Nothing’s ever happened here in 24 years,” said Mr. Rog. “And now suddenly we have all these shady characters walking around. You don’t want to judge, but they’re just different people.”
His wife added, “Since that apartment building was built, it hasn’t been as pleasant. I don’t know who lives there; they all have expensive cars. I don’t like the feeling.”
Mrs. Rog said she woke up Sunday morning to find the street cordoned off. “I opened the curtains and everything was taped off. Then you think: What’s going on now? I really hope it doesn’t get any worse.”
The shooting adds to a growing list of violent incidents in IJsselmonde. Earlier this year, police reported that 24-year-old Sendric S. had confessed to killing three men in the district between December 2024 and January 2025.
The victims, aged 63, 58, and 81, were shot in separate attacks.
