An American country singer has paid tribute to two Aussie heroes he saw take down a crazed African man who abused and spat on a female McDonald’s worker in Melbourne.
Drew Baldridge, who is touring Australia with rapper Jelly Roll, shared the story on Instagram along with video of the incident, during which one of the Good Samaritans yelled “wrong country if you wanna abuse women, mate” at the abusive customer.
The country star said the aggressive man came into the fast food restaurant and said “f you, you dumb b” to a woman taking orders about five times before suddenly spitting at her.
“About that time, this other dude come over, he said ‘hey man, we don’t talk to women like that’, and before I know it these dudes got this dude on the ground,” he said.
“And the guys were holding him down saying ‘wrong country to abuse women’.”
Baldridge said the men’s actions reminded him of his new song rebel, which is about standing up for what is right.
“But it was just so inspiring to watch these dudes stand up for this woman. And I just think our country needs more of that, and a lot of people are not going to talk about this … some people are going to be like ‘oh, you shouldn’t fight’.
“But sometimes you gotta know when to fight.”
The singer’s Instagram post attracted hundreds of comments, including from UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal, who replied with three clapping emojis.
“God Bless you Drew for speaking out. And God Bless those men who laid that dudes butt on the ground and told him WRONG COUNTRY!!!” an American commenter said.
“Bravo to those two blokes! Thank you for showing everyone that his behaviour is not acceptable!” said another woman.
