A 25-year-old Algerian migrant, who was supposed to be in a semi-open detention unit, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at Maule station in Yvelines, France.
The assault took place on Nov. 2 while the teenager was waiting for a train home. The man, who was under an obligation to return to his facility in Villejuif that afternoon, instead remained in Maule, claiming later in court that he was “sick” and had stayed with his girlfriend.
According to the case presented at the Versailles Criminal Court as cited by Actu, the man approached the victim shortly after 6 p.m., asking for help buying a travel pass. As she assisted him, he became aggressive, asking if he could kiss her. When she refused, he grabbed her and kissed her by force. The court heard how the girl moved away to a bench, but he followed her, caressing her body and moving toward her genitals.
The assault continued briefly on the train before she managed to distance herself.
The accused, who required an interpreter in court, denied wrongdoing. He claimed he already knew the girl and that their contact had been consensual.
“I had met her before in Mantes-la-Jolie and she told me she was 19. I’m not the kind of person who attacks women,” he told the judges.
The victim contested this entirely. She told the court she had never seen him before and had not been to Mantes-la-Jolie in a long time.
“When he kissed me, I felt panic and confusion,” she said. “I didn’t understand what was happening. I just wanted it to stop.”
Her father testified that she had self-harmed after the assault, saying she wanted to erase the places on her body where she had been touched.
The man, who arrived in France in 2018, has six prior convictions, including for indecent exposure to a minor. The court heard that he consumes cannabis daily and regularly drinks alcohol, despite serving time in an open detention facility.
The prosecutor described his explanations as inconsistent and implausible, saying the victim’s account was fully supported by the evidence.
The prosecution requested a 30-month prison term and a permanent expulsion order from French territory. The judges ultimately imposed a harsher penalty: three years for the sexual assault and an additional six months for violating the conditions of his semi-open detention.
After completing his three and a half year sentence, he will be expelled from France.
