A 31-year-old Syrian man was forcibly committed to a psychiatric facility on Wednesday after suddenly attacking four people, including three women and a passerby, in northern Dresden.
Police insist the incident was not religiously or politically motivated, despite witnesses reporting shouts of “Allahu Akbar” during the arrest.
The series of assaults began shortly after 10 a.m. at the Alttrachau tram stop on Leipziger Straße, where the man allegedly punched and kicked a 29-year-old woman who was standing with her toddler. A 67-year-old motorist who stopped to intervene was also attacked.
Minutes later, he approached another vehicle on the same street and struck a 64-year-old woman through the open passenger window. A 37-year-old passerby rushed to her aid and was also beaten before managing to restrain the attacker until officers arrived.
Police arrested the man at the scene. Witnesses said he shouted religious phrases, but investigators stressed that the outbursts appeared to be a symptom of mental instability.
“The political statements have nothing to do with the man’s obvious mental health issues,” police spokesman Marko Laske said, as cited by TAG24. Officers confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs.
All four victims required medical treatment; the 64-year-old woman was taken to hospital, while the others were treated at the scene. The suspect was subsequently sectioned and transferred to a specialist clinic, according to the police report.
The man, a Syrian national, is now under investigation for assault. Authorities say his motive remains unclear and the inquiry is ongoing.
Claims on social media suggested the man was in possession of a knife. Remix News has been unable to corroborate this.
In fact, NIUS admits it first reported that the Syrian used a knife, but later issued a correction which read, “In our push notification, we reported that a knife was used as a weapon. In reality, however, the perpetrator attacked his victims without any other weapon.”
