Footage is circulating on social media, appearing to show that Russian forces have taken the key city of Pokrovsk, or the ruins of what was Pokrovsk.
Kyiv has yet to confirm defeat, but the Russian Defense Ministry also released a video on Thursday, according to Reuters, showing its soldiers moving freely and patrolling the city’s streets, with no Ukrainian forces visible anywhere.

This would mean the end of Moscow’s year-long effort to surround Pokrovsk, which serves as a major logistics hub for supply lines for Ukrainian forces.
Russian maps now show the city under Russian control, although Ukrainian maps still mark Pokrovsk as a neutral zone, not under the control of either side.
Noted as the “gateway to Donetsk,” taking Pokrovsk would allow Putin to advance his forces north toward the two largest cities in the Donetsk region still under Ukrainian control, Kramatorsk and Slovyansk.
“Seizing Pokrovsk would put Vladimir Putin a step closer to his goal of occupying the entire Donbas,” a BBC analysis stated a couple weeks back, when it emerged that Russia was close to total control.
As Remix News reported at that time, the city is of significance because it serves as the logistics hob for the eastern Ukrainian theater of operations, the city and its surroundings are home to a railway distribution hub with huge storage capacities, while the H-32 highway is the most important east-west transport axis, he says. This is used by the Ukrainian army to transport supplies, fuel and combat equipment in Donetsk. Two north-south roads also run through it, on which maneuvering troops move.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already acknowledged that Ukraine’s situation in Pokrovsk was extremely difficult, and that Russians have infiltrated the town, but he has also repeatedly denied that the city had fallen into Russian hands.
Now, with a new U.S.-Russian peace deal in the works and Zelensky in the middle of a massive corruption scandal, Ukraine now appears to be in full retreat,
