Nigerian asylum seeker on trial for murder of Dutch teen as she cycled home raped another woman days before, court hears

The migrant defendant suspected of killing 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude and raping a 30-year-old woman days earlier spoke only four words during his first appearance in an Amsterdam court on Tuesday.

The suspect, known as “Chris Jude,” spoke only to confirm his personal details, and answered “no” when asked if he wished to comment on the charges, according to court reporting by De Telegraaf newspaper.

Lisa was murdered in the early hours of Aug. 20 as she returned home from central Amsterdam on her bike.

According to prosecutors, the investigative trail led them to the nearby asylum center, where the suspect had been staying for only a few weeks. CCTV footage shows a man on a distinctive bicycle — black with a white front fork — following Lisa on her route home. Cameras captured him riding behind her from Spaklerweg and remaining near the scene along Holterbergweg where she was pushed off her bike into the grass.

At 4:07 a.m., the teenager called the emergency services. During the call, she cried out, “No, help me,” before the line went silent. Police arrived minutes later but found her dead. Nearby, officers located her phone, ID cards, and a gray hoodie, later found to contain both Lisa’s DNA and the suspect’s. Wet footprints and a fresh bicycle track suggested the attacker had fled quickly.

When detectives reviewed surveillance near the asylum center, the same man was seen arriving shortly after the attack and washing his face, hands, legs, and shoes at an outdoor tap. His bicycle was parked at the center, and staff identified it as his. He was arrested the next day.

A knife carrying Lisa’s DNA was found in his locker along with a bucket containing wet clothes.

Five days before the killing, a woman staying at a hotel in the Dutch capital had been violently raped along Weesperzijde. Surveillance again linked the same distinctive bicycle and showed the suspect first following the woman and then returning to the asylum center around 2 a.m. The woman suffered multiple injuries, including a broken jaw. DNA taken from the rape scene matched the suspect.

The man says he is 22 and from Nigeria, but his identity remains unconfirmed as he possessed no documents upon arriving in the Netherlands. According to prosecutors, he speaks a dialect associated with a specific region of Nigeria. Requests for assistance have been sent to Nigerian authorities. His lawyer told the court that the suspect had lived in several orphanages in Nigeria and Tunisia and that the names “Chris” and “Jude” were given to him during those years.

According to Het Parool, the suspect said he was smuggled by boat to Europe and picked up by authorities near the Italian island of Lampedusa. He traveled on to the Netherlands via several European countries and was registered at the registration center in Ter Apel on June 21, just two months before Lisa’s murder.

The defense also said the suspect reports hearing “voices” since childhood and sometimes cannot recall events. He claimed to have left the asylum center on the nights in question because “the voices got too loud,” and returned to find wounds on his hands and a knife in his possession, but did not know how it got there.

His lawyer insisted that he has not confessed or denied the allegations and will answer questions “when he is able to.” Such a defense opens up the possibility of a mental health diagnosis, which could see him rendered incapable of criminal intent.

The prosecution argued that the suspect should remain detained, describing him as a flight risk who had only been stopped because he was arrested quickly. The court agreed, ordering that he stay behind bars until the next preliminary hearing on Feb. 11.

A full psychiatric evaluation will take place at the Pieter Baan Center early next year.
