Three Moroccans arrested for gang rape of Italian teen, dragged from her boyfriend’s car in Rome park

Rome police have arrested three Moroccan men accused of dragging an 18-year-old girl out of her boyfriend’s car and gang raping her while restraining her partner and forcing him to watch.

Investigators say the woman was attacked on the evening of Oct. 25 after a migrant gang surrounded the parked car where she and her 24-year-old boyfriend had stopped late at night in Tor Tre Teste park in the Italian capital.

Police believe the group may have consisted of up to five individuals and are still searching for two suspects.

According to police, the Italian couple had parked their vehicle in a secluded area of the park when the attackers broke the car windows and forced both occupants outside. Corriere della Sera reported that the men restrained the young man while one of the attackers raped the woman. Mobile phones from the couple were then stolen before the men fled on foot.

Authorities say fingerprints recovered from the windows and the vehicle link the three arrested men to the scene.

After the attackers fled, the couple contacted emergency services and provided statements that allowed detectives to identify the suspects quickly.

Two suspects were detained on Oct. 28. A third man was arrested in Venice several days later. Police have kept information limited due to the ongoing investigation, and officers continue to assess whether additional individuals were involved.

The case has prompted political commentary criticizing the limited national attention the incident initially received. Il Prima Nazionale noted that this is not the first serious sexual assault reported in the Tor Tre Teste area. Last August, a Gambian man was arrested in connection with two separate rapes committed between Via Prenestina and the park, including that of a 60-year-old woman.

Despite the seriousness of those incidents, they also did not lead to a broader national debate.

“This silence, even more than the violence, is the political crux of the matter. It reveals how rigidly selective contemporary rhetoric on women’s rights is. It provokes outrage when the perpetrator is an Italian man, recognizable. It fades when the perpetrators are illegal immigrants already marginalized,” the site wrote.

Earlier this week, Remix News reported on data from Italy’s interior ministry for 2024, showing that foreign nationals committed 44 percent of all rapes that year, despite comprising just 9 percent of the country’s resident population.

The data is even more alarming when focusing on minor suspects. In 2023, government data showed that 56 percent of all arrests of minors for sexual violence were non-Italians.
