Afghan Migrant Charged in England Over Sex Assaults

Police have charged a 30-year-old Afghan national with sexually assaulting three women and entering the United Kingdom illegally, Hampshire Constabulary said Saturday.

Sohail Amiri, of Highfield Lane in Southampton, is accused of approaching a woman just after midnight on Tuesday on Upper Shaftesbury Avenue and attempting to kiss her. He also faces two further counts of sexual assault linked to incidents on September 23, when he allegedly approached two women on Westwood Road and made inappropriate comments.

Amiri has additionally been charged with entering the country without leave under Section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971.

He is due to appear before Southampton Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning.

The charges come amid heightened local tensions over immigration. The Highfield House Hotel, which reportedly houses asylum seekers, has been the focus of several anti-immigration protests in recent months, with counter-demonstrations also taking place.
