Polish aid to Ukraine is ‘illegal,’ says Confederation party leader

Present and former leaders in Poland’s political scene are calling for Poland to wake up to the reality of where Poland’s “hard-earned funds” are actually going.

Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak, a co-leader of the Confederation party, has called out the Polish government for its aid to Ukraine, saying that such transfers are “not authorized” and a violation of the country’s constitution.

“Financial aid should not be directed from Poland to Ukraine not because of corruption, but because the Polish state is supposed to serve Polish citizens and the politicians ruling Poland are simply not authorized to transfer the flow of money to other countries as long as it is not passed in some act of parliament and placed under, for example, ‘international aid’ in the budget act,” says Confederation MP Krzysztof Bosak, according to Do Rzezcy.

“We have never passed such changes to the budget, which is why I believe that the transfer of money to Ukraine, Polish money, either by Prime Minister Morawiecki or by Foreign Minister Sikorski, is simply illegal,” he added.

Last week, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) conducted a search of the apartment of Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office. The move signals that the explosive “golden toilet” corruption scandal enveloping President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle is only expanding, reaching right up to Zelensky’s righthand man.

Yermak confirmed the operation and pledged full cooperation, but shortly thereafter, Zelensky announced that Yermak had resigned, just the latest figure in the Ukrainian ruling party to be dismissed in connection with the scandal.

Earlier, Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk and Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko, whom the opposition claims was involved in a close personal relationship with Hrynchuk, also resigned.

According to investigators, participants in the scheme collected bribes from Enerhoatom’s contractors, amounting to 10 to 15 percent of the contract value. The illegal funds were allegedly legalized through a so-called back office in central Kyiv, through which approximately $100 million passed.

The situation in Ukraine raises questions about further financial support from Warsaw and other EU nations.

Bosak also commented on President Karol Nawrocki’s cancellation of his meeting with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán, a staunch supporter of ending the war in Ukraine and major critic of Zelensky, especially in the wake of this scandal.

According to the Confederation politician, “it’s a bit of a theatrical move, probably unnecessary. I see much greater potential in cooperation with Prime Minister Orbán than in publicly distancing myself from him,” he said.

Nevertheless, Nawrocki still joined the V4 meeting, where Orbán was also present.

Meanwhile, former Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller told Polsat News that Zelensky’s latest scandal will endanger the prospects for peace.

This news will have “a huge impact on the conclusion of negotiations and a possible ceasefire,” he said, adding ominously, “There’s another scandal lurking behind the scenes involving the Ukrainian Ministry of National Defense. Every piece of news like this significantly weakens Ukraine’s position and the willingness of European countries to help.”

Miller emphasized that, as a Pole, he does not want to take responsibility—and does not feel co-responsible—for the subsequent scandals erupting in Ukraine.

“I would like the Polish government to take a very close look at how the aid coming from Poland is used there, because I would not like to be a citizen of a country that is not able to check it and tell us where our hard-earned funds are going – into which pockets,” said the former prime minister, appealing to the government to change course related to its ongoing support for Kyiv and Zelensky.
