Sweden: Afghan charged with murder and dismembering friend’s body to store in freezer in large-scale fraud case

A public prosecutor in Sweden has filed charges against 26-year-old Morteza Mirzayi, an Afghan national accused of murdering his colleague, Sharif Haidari, desecrating his remains, and committing dozens of aggravated frauds.

The case, one of the most extensive to reach Kalmar District Court in recent years, is scheduled for trial later this month.

According to the indictment cited by Petterssonsblogg, Haidari was killed on or around Jan. 2 in Oskarshamn, a coastal city to the country’s east. The prosecution alleges that Mirzayi murdered him before dismembering the body over an extended period. Investigators say parts of Haidari’s skeletal remains were damaged, internal organs removed, sections of skin cut away, and parts of the body stored in plastic bags in the suspect’s freezer. Other remains have never been found.

Prosecutors argue that the handling of the remains was “particularly reckless” and complicated efforts to determine the precise cause of death. The charge is classified as a gross violation of the peace of the grave.

The alleged motive centers on a series of financial crimes. As reported by Samnytt, while Haidari was already dead, Mirzayi is accused of using the victim’s BankID to take out a 100,000-krona loan and to carry out 47 counts of aggravated fraud and one count of aggravated fraud through document forgery. More than 200,000 kronor (€18,250) was moved to the defendant’s accounts or spent via gambling platforms. Prosecutors argue that the murder was intended to conceal these transactions.

“In my opinion, there is a clear financial motive behind this murder,” said prosecutor Emma Olsson, as cited by the Barometern news outlet.

Mirzayi denies all charges. In multiple interrogations conducted with a Persian interpreter, he has claimed that an unknown man, whom he calls “Mohammad,” was responsible for killing and dismembering Haidari. He told police that he was frightened and controlled by the unidentified individual, saying, “I went numb, couldn’t say anything,” and later, “I saw that he started with the leg, and cut.” Investigators say they have found no forensic or digital evidence of a third person.

Technical material recovered from Mirzayi’s devices includes online searches such as “What does it look like inside the body?” Confronted with this search, he denied remembering it and rejected any link to the killing. Police say the tools believed to have been used in the dismemberment carry only DNA from the defendant and the victim.

Mirzayi was arrested on April 18 at Arlanda Airport after returning from Iran via Istanbul. A brief forensic psychiatric assessment concluded that he did not suffer from a serious mental disorder at the time of the alleged offenses.

Both the victim and the defendant worked for Oskarshamn Municipality and arrived in Sweden as unaccompanied minors from Afghanistan roughly a decade ago. Authorities confirmed Haidari’s identity only after efforts to reach relatives abroad, which delayed public disclosure.

Colleagues have described both men as quiet and polite. “You were shocked when you read what happened… these are people you’ve visited,” one co-worker told investigators.

The charges include murder, aggravated violation of the peace of the grave, aggravated fraud on 47 occasions, and aggravated fraud through forgery.

Prosecutors are also seeking Mirzayi’s deportation from Sweden with a permanent re-entry ban.
