Fury erupts at Sydney Christmas tree saying ‘happy holidays’

Aussies have reacted with fury to a giant Christmas tree in the heart of Sydney that says “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”.

Political commentator Matthew Camenzuli shared a photo of the tree at 25 Martin Place, formerly known as the MLC Centre, which was made by Italian fashion house Dolce&Gabbana and also says “Warm Wishes” and “Seasons Greetings”.

The 14.5 metre tree has 520 decorations, more than 9,000 sparkling lights, and a 1.5 metre star topper, according to the building’s website, and is located near the City of Sydney’s official tree, which is the tallest in the state.

“Australia, if we do not begin to push back now, we will lose everything that made our nation great. It’s Merry Christmas! Anything less is offensive to Christians, and Australia is a Christian country,” Mr Camenzuli wrote on X.

His post attracted hundreds of comments, with most agreeing the tree should say “Merry Christmas”.

“Isn’t ‘Happy Holidays’ an American thing? We’ve always wished [people a] ‘Merry Christmas’,” one Aussie wrote.

“If we are doing this to appease the huge influx of non-Christian migrants then we will eventually lose why this time of year is so special in the first place. ‘Happy holidays’ is meaningless PC rubbish,” said another.

“The ‘Christmas Carols’ at my kids primary school has had a name change to ‘the end of year concert’,” a third revealed.

But some objected to the post, with one person writing: “Conservatives support the right of private property owners to do as they please on their property, within certain limits. Those limits do not include governments dictating the messaging to accompany displays”.

“I am not appealing to government. I think the government is the problem. And you’re right, they have every right to do whatever they want. I have a right to critisise,” Mr Camenzuli responded.

The website of 25 Martin Place, home to a controversial skyscraper designed by architect Harry Seidler that replaced some of Sydney’s most iconic 19th century buildings, describes the installation as “Sydney most luxurious Christmas tree” that brings “a touch of Italian glamour to Sydney”.
