Donald Trump left his critics screaming in agony after he released the National Security Strategy report for 2025.
These papers are usually high-sounding mush, but this one is pure common sense. National security means putting America first, with the strongest economy and the best army in the world. It means no free-loaders: Europe and Japan will pay their way. It means no more “forever wars,” nation-building, or peddling democracy and homo rights to people who don’t want them. And it means vigorous national sovereignty, free from “intrusive transnational organizations,” especially the EU.
It’s how to achieve these goals that really upsets lefties. First, “border security is the primary element of national security,” so “mass migration must end.” America must “cherish . . . its past glories and its heroes,” and “root out so-called DEI.” Meritocracy must be the rule, but that doesn’t mean importing so-called “global talent” because, as the report says, “in our every principle and action, America and Americans must always come first.” The National Security Strategy, or NSS, even says long-term security requires a “reinvigoration of American spiritual and cultural health.” How about that? The report also says Europe has got to get over its hysteria about Russia and help stop the fighting in Ukraine.
But it’s the section called “Promoting European Greatness” that really set the think-tankers and Eurocrats howling. It says that the continent faces “civilizational erasure” because of “migration,” which leads to “strife, censorship . . . suppression of political opposition, cratering birthrates, and loss of national identities.” If this keep up, Europe will be “unrecognizable in 20 years of less.” “We want Europe to remain European” because “we will need a strong Europe.”
We are “sentimentally attached to the European continent — and, of course, to Britain and Ireland,” and we “want to restore their former greatness.”
The NSS points out that if NATO members become majority non-European, they may cease to be the same nations that signed the NATO charter in 1949.
Quite so. We don’t want Britain to become the first Islamo-Caribbean-Hindu nuclear power. For that matter, I don’t want the United States to become the first Afro-Hispanic nuclear power.
The report places great hope in “the growing influence of patriotic European parties,” that is to say, nationalist parties that may be top vote-getters but are kept out of power by unholy alliances among the old, befuddled, capitulationist parties.
The NSS report singles out the European Union as the “main transnational body that undermines political liberty and sovereignty,” and which denounces Europeans who don’t want to give their countries away to strangers.
And, so, of course the stolidly liberal European Policy Center calls the NSS an existential threat to Europe.
It says, “Trump’s America is not an ally but an adversary,” and “the answer is more Europe, not less, to defend integration and liberal democracy.” More power for Brussels, so it can squash any nation that gets out of line.
Foreign Policy, which used to be a serious magazine, says the NSS “ratifies an adversarial relationship,” that Mr. Trump “seeks to divide and conquer the continent, with much of the dirty work carried out by nationalist, far-right European forces.” ONLY ‘DOES EUROPE’ The NSS does not treat Europe as an adversary at all. America wants a strong Europe of sovereign nations that, as the report says, “want to restore their former greatness.” That means keeping out immigrants, many of whom hate Europe and would certainly never fight for it.
The Wall Street Journal found an English “expert” to say it’s time “to assume that the traditional trans-Atlantic relationship is dead,” and a Scot “expert” to say, “This is a strategy to destroy the present Europe.”
Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, remained diplomatic, saying only that Europe doesn’t need outside advice on how to run its affairs, but some real loonies got into print, mostly American.

The Atlantic’s article about the NSS sniffed that “Most of the document consists of bombast, sycophancy, lies, inconsistencies, and grotesque self-contradictions.”
Salon ran a title that actually got it right — “Trump’s foreign policy vision: Make Europe white again,” but that wasn’t a compliment.
The NSS is “alternately idiotic and delusional” and is in an “unhinged and unconcealed racist panic.”
The stupidest critics screamed that it’s inconsistent to say we won’t peddle democracy and feminism to Muslims and Africans, but we will try to get Europe back on track. Of course, it’s inconsistent, and it should be. Europeans are white; they’re our people. Muslims and Africans aren’t; we don’t much care how they run their countries. We want Europe to be a continent of strong, proud, authentic nations — allies in this fabulous enterprise we call Western Civilization.
We don’t want to destroy Europe; we want it to be magnificent, and for that, it must be forever European.
